I recently finished reading the book, Surprised by Oxford by Carolyn Weber. It is a memoir of her spiritual journey while spending a year studying at Oxford.
I must admit that I was leery when I read the first chapter because Carolyn is a literature major and I myself have read very few books in my lifetime, and certainly have never read any “classics” and therefore struggled with many references. But her writing drew me in and I actually found myself wanting to know the meaning of the witty comments exchanged between her and her friends.
Her writing makes you feel as if you are a butterfly sitting on her shoulder experiencing her first year with her. Her wisdom and questioning makes me yearn for more; more laughter, more depth, and more love.
I usually don’t have the desire to read a book more than once, but I am going to purchase my own copy so I can underline and highlight. I kind of wish I would have bought it in the first place, but then again, maybe I wouldn’t have wanted to read it again.
